RESTORATION AND CONSERVATION OF HERITAGE

In the interventions carried out on artistic heritage assets, we adopt the essential measure of preserving the artwork, seeking precise conditions to prevent alterations and halt deterioration, performing minimal intervention, respecting the work’s historicity, ensuring the recognition of its aesthetic and historical aspects in each intervention, and ensuring the reversibility of methods and products.

As a starting point, we analyze the technical and historical characteristics of the work to be intervened in; then, the most appropriate processes and techniques for each case are determined. During the intervention, samples are taken, and all significant data is analyzed so the intervention aligns with the information obtained. Documentation is always maintained. The results stand out in a technical intervention report.

We have formed a multidisciplinary team of restorers, sculptors, architects, biologists, historians, chemists, radiologists, and gilding specialists. These resources allow us to approach each artwork from various perspectives and use the most advanced scientific instruments and methodologies for its analysis.

Carmen Usúa carried out most of the interventions in painting and sculpture, and Luis Tovar did the gilding work with Víctor Manzanal and Antonio Robles. Mariano Nieto and Estudio Arco formed a temporary business association to restore the Mendavia altarpiece.

In 2014, we published the book «Gothic Crucifix in the Chapel of the University Clinic of Navarra,» which details the acquisition, a historical-artistic study of the image, the restoration process, and various photographs of the sculpture along with poems of the crucified Christ.
